HEMINGFORD – Gavin Bell, a senior at Hemingford High School, is Nspire Today!’s Male Student of the Month for March. He’s the top student in his class academically, holding a 3.98 GPA. He’s also in his second year in National Honor Society, and in October he was named a NSAA Believer and Achiever. Other school activities he’s involved in are One Act, Quiz Bowl, FFA, football, basketball, and track and field. In FFA, he’s serving as president of Hemingford’s chapter this school year. He was the treasurer last year. His highlights include earning his state FFA degree his junior year and winning the agronomy contest at districts each of the last two years. He’ll participate in his third state competition this April, competing in poultry judging and agronomy. In One Act, he’s won multiple conference and state acting awards. He’s also been a standout athlete. In football, he started two years, playing tight end and defensive end, and he earned all-conference honors. In basketball, he was a three-year starting post, and he earned all-conference recognition in that sport as well. In track and field, he competes in the hurdles. Outside of school, he’s heavily involved in 4-H. This year he’s showing pigs, goats, sheep, beef cattle, and dairy cattle. One of his top achievements in 4-H came last August when he was named the Grand Champion Dairy Showman at the Box Butte County Fair. During his 10 years in 4-H, he’s won a number of other ribbons. Also outside of school, he works as a ranch hand for Justin Ansley. After high school, he plans to attend the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and major in animal science. His parents are Chad and Valery Bell.
Q: How has your senior year of school been going overall?
BELL: “It’s been going well. It’s gone by pretty fast. I think being involved in so many things has made the school year move really fast.”
Q: Has this school year seemed a lot different to you since you’re a senior, or has it seemed like just another school year?
BELL: “It has felt different. I don’t have hardly any classes that are real challenging, so that plays into it a little bit.”
Q: How proud are you of what you’ve been able to accomplish academically in high school?
BELL: “I’ve worked pretty hard to get the grades I have. I’m hoping they’ll take me where I want to go in life, and I plan to keep my grades high in college.”
