MORRILL – Reegan French of Lyman, who just completed his junior year at Morrill High School, is Nspire Today!’s Male Athlete of the Month for June. The 6-foot-2, 275-pound French was recently named Morrill High School’s Male Athlete of the Year for the 2022-2023 school year. He’s a three-sport standout, competing in football, wrestling, and track and field. In football last fall, he started on both the offensive and defensive lines. He earned all-conference and all-district honors. In wrestling this past winter, he recorded a 31-13 record at heavyweight and qualified for the Nebraska state tournament. In his first season of competing in track and field this spring, French performed well in the shot put and discus before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. Also at school, French is involved in One Acts and Quiz Bowl. Outside of school, he’s involved in Morrill’s FCA group. After he graduates from high school, French wants to attend college and pursue an education degree to become a math teacher. His parents are Robert and Kelli French.
Q: You recently received the Male Athlete of the Year honor at Morrill High School. What was your reaction when that was announced?
FRENCH: “I was shocked. I was hoping I would get that honor, but I wasn’t sure I would. When they said my name, I couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear.”
Q: Where does that honor rank on your list of accomplishments so far in school?
FRENCH: “That’s probably number one right now.”
Q: How would you describe the way your junior year went in athletics?
FRENCH: “I feel like it was about resiliency. I went through a couple injuries in football – I broke my finger and hyperextended my knee – and in track I fractured my ankle. Overall, though, I thought it was a good year. I had a lot of fun, and I performed better than I thought I would.”
