NSPIRING YOUTH: Scottsbluff girl has a love – and talent – for playing the double bass

Scottsbluff High School junior Jolie Rodriguez started playing the double bass in orchestra midway through her sixth-grade year, and since then she’s continued to improve her skills – so much so that she recently was selected for the Nebraska all-state orchestra. Rodriguez said her hope is to get even better at the double bass so she can someday achieve her dream of playing in a professional orchestra.

SCOTTSBLUFF – After playing the double bass in orchestra for about three years, Jolie Rodriguez of Scottsbluff knew she still had a lot of room to improve.

But she figured she had made enough progress with the instrument – and was good enough at it – that she would have a chance to earn all-state honors her freshman year at Scottsbluff High School.

Unfortunately, the message she received that year from the Nebraska Music Education Association notified her that she hadn’t been selected for the all-state team.

“I was pretty devastated,” said Rodriguez, who’s now a junior at SHS. “I really wanted to be selected all-state, so when I didn’t get chosen, it kind of made me second guess my talent and my skills.”
