TORRINGTON, Wyo. – Barrett Eichenberger, a senior at Torrington High School, is Nspire Today!’s Male Athlete of the Month for March. He just wrapped up an incredible high school wrestling career, including capturing his first 3A state championship at 138 pounds. He finished this season with a 46-7 record and surpassed 100 career victories this winter. As a junior, Barrett placed fourth at state and ended with a 29-15 record. He also qualified for state his first two years of high school. His freshman year, he won 13 matches at 120, and his sophomore year he posted a 22-20 mark at 126. Also during high school, he was a three-time All-
American, an achievement earned by placing in a national tournament. Outside of school, Barrett is involved in the youth group at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Torrington, and he also works for AGC Construction. After high school, he plans to attend Minnesota West Community and Technical College, where he’ll wrestle and pursue a lineman certificate. His parents are Steven and Danielle Eichenberger.
Q: Describe how it felt to win a state wrestling championship.
EICHENBERGER: “Honestly, it didn’t feel like I had expected it to feel. It kind of felt like I just went out there and won another tournament. I was excited because I knew I had won state, but afterward, it was kind of like, ‘OK, now it’s time to get back to work and try to accomplish the next thing.’”
Q: How long was it your goal to win a state championship?
EICHENBERGER: “Probably since the end of my eighth-grade year. That’s when I kind of started thinking, ‘I want to win state one of these years.’ That was my goal, and I worked hard to get it.”
Q: You placed fourth at state your junior year. How motivated were you to come back this year and get first?
EICHENBERGER: “I was really motivated. In our wrestling room, we have a Wall of Fame that includes the names of everyone from our school who has placed at state. I remember thinking, ‘Well, I’m on that wall now (for placing fourth at state), but I really want to have first place next to my name.’ I did everything I could to get better and put myself in a position to try to win a state championship.”
