Nancy was born March 4, 1945 in Denver, Colorado to Melvin and Ruth Beverly “Lee” (Monson) Anderson. She was the oldest of four children. She graduated from Strasburg High School in 1963. She attended Colorado State University and graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology.
She married William “Bill” Charles Steele on July 22, 1966 in Fairplay, Colorado, and they were happily married for 55 years before Bill’s passing in August 2021. They made their home in numerous communities, finally settling in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. They were blessed with three children, Kimberly Anne, Andrew Brent and Tracy Erin.
Nancy wore many hats through her life where her employment always helped support the needs of her family at the time. She was an in-home daycare provider, while her children were little. When the children were school aged, she worked several years downtown at Ample Annies and volunteered at Lincoln Heights and Cub Scouts. As the kids grew older, she followed them and Bill to all of their activities including thousands of miles to basketball games as a devoted Coaches wife and then basketball mom. She could be found behind the bench, in the concession stand at the 23 Club, and teaching Sunday School, all to support her kids.
One of her biggest honors was being chosen as the 1979 Young Mother of the Year from the American Mothers Committee. Their purpose was to strengthen the moral and spiritual foundations of the home.
Her true passion was the church and doing God’s work and was able to join the staff at Calvary Lutheran Church. She worked as the Parish Ministry Associate for well over 25 years. She furthered her education and on June 2, 1996 earned her certification as a Parish Ministry Associate, with the Nebraska Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This was her true calling as many will tell you—ministry and caring of others. She was a tremendous listener and many have expressed how much we are going to miss her genuine hugs.
She spent much of her time volunteering and serving on several community and state boards and agencies. She served as treasurer for the Cooperative Ministries Council and also of the Panhandle Cluster for the Nebraska Synod.
