PASTOR COLUMN by Jared Pilkington: Lessons learned from stubbing my toe

Take a second and think back to the last time you made the long and perilous journey to your bathroom in the middle of the night and did the unthinkable – stubbed your toe! How terrible was it? Stubbing your toe in the middle of the night shocks your system beyond all belief and regaining your sense of equilibrium in those wee-hours of the morning seems to take as much effort as running a marathon entirely up-hill. It is literally dangerous to walk around without any vision or sense of direction and the risk only escalates depending on the degree of your need for corrective lenses.

Bible talks about this, believe it or not. Not stubbing your toe in the middle of the night and needing a full-fledged paramedic team to rescue you from your condition, but about living without vision. Proverbs 29:18 says, “Without vision, the people perish” (KJV). Those are some intense words from King Solomon! Perish into what? Purposeless, meaningless, apathetic lives filled with mediocrity and the status-quo. Here is the deal, Jesus created you, died for you, and rose from the dead for you to live an abundant life thriving in relationship with Him and others! And you must know that you have been created to live a vision-driven life. One that is not limited by your failures, mistakes, or circumstances. God-given vision gives direction, provides purpose, pushes you through barriers, infuses you with power when feeling weak, makes you adaptable when change comes, and gives you the ability to recover when life hits.

You may not think that living a vision-driven life is possible for you because of things that you have done or have been done to you. You may not have any idea of where to begin in crafting a vision. Or maybe you have felt you had a God-given vision for your life, but things look foggy, or you have lost sight of it altogether. There is hope for you! The beauty of God’s Word is that He gives us proof of fulfilled vision in the lives of others so we can have evidence that propels us into living vision-driven lives, confident that He will do the same for us.
