PRIDE IN AG: ‘It’s like this house was meant for us and that this is what we were supposed to do’

Britni and Eric Schmaltz had no idea that they would become full-time ranchers when they made the decision 10 years ago to stop renting in Scottsbluff and purchase a home north of Bayard. One opportunity led to another, however, and the Schmaltz’s eventually found themselves running a successful feedlot and cow/calf operation. They say they couldn’t be happier or more grateful for the path that led them to become ranchers and enjoy what they feel is the ‘most perfect, rewarding’ lifestyle for their family.

BAYARD – After living in a house that they rented north of Scottsbluff for a few years, Britni and Eric Schmaltz desired to make a change. They wanted to be homeowners.

“It felt like we were just throwing money away by renting,” Britni said. “We weren’t investing in anything.”

So, the Schmaltz’s, who got married in 2009, began looking at houses to buy in the Scottsbluff/Gering area. But they often hit a roadblock – either the property was too expensive, or it wasn’t big enough to accommodate their two horses and the truck that Eric was driving to haul grain.

“It was frustrating,” she said.
