TYING THE KNOT SPECIAL SECTION: ‘I wasn’t expecting this to happen at all’

Ty Hoksbergen, 22, and Makyla Mason, 20, didn’t know each other when they first met this past summer while working at Camp Rock Ministries in Redington. However, they developed a deep connection early on thanks to their similar demeanors and strong faith in God, and after dating for just a few weeks, they decided they wanted to get married. Ty proposed to Makyla in September, and now they’re eager to tie the knot in late February and continue serving in youth ministry together.

REDINGTON – On the first day of staff training last May at Camp Rock Ministries in Redington, Ty Hoksbergen, 22, grabbed a plastic plate and filled it with a few goodies from a charcuterie board that was set up for staff members to enjoy during meetings.

When Ty finished eating, he wasn’t sure what to do with his plate. So, he asked a fellow staff member standing nearby, Makyla Mason, if he was supposed to throw his plate away.

The 20-year-old Makyla smiled, knowing it was a disposable plate, and then decided to joke around with Ty.

“I said, ‘No, you need to keep the plate. That’s your plate for the whole summer,’” Makayla said with a giggle.

Ty then smiled, too, realizing that he probably should have known it was a plate meant for a one-time usage. He went along with the joke, though, and even made a fun bet with the camp director, Art DeVos, that he would continue to use that same plastic plate for the rest of the summer.

“He didn’t believe I would do it,” Ty said with a smile. “But for the next several weeks, I used that same plate for every meal we had at the camp. It started to crack, and I had to use epoxy to fix the bottom, but I kept using it. Finally, Art got fed up with it and said, ‘OK, you win.’”
