WINTER SPORTS SPECIAL EDITION: Scottsbluff grad bringing the energy for Cougars

Yara Garcia was well known for the high energy she brought to the court during her days as a standout basketball player at Scottsbluff High School. She’s been doing the same thing at WNCC, where her energy and play-making skills at both the offensive and defensive ends of the court have helped the Cougar women’s basketball team continue to excel.

SCOTTSBLUFF – Whenever Yara Garcia goes through something challenging, she says she always relies on her faith to get through it.

“There’s always going to be bumps in the road, but my faith in God has really helped me get through things,” said Garcia, a 2020 Scottsbluff High School graduate. “You have to believe it before you see it, so falling back on that has always given me comfort.”

Garcia relied on her faith a lot while transitioning from Scottsbluff High School to Western Nebraska Community College three years ago. Garcia was a star basketball player for the Bearcats at both ends of the court, and because of her performance, she earned an opportunity to continue her basketball career at WNCC.

Her first year at WNCC, though, was a challenging one – as it is for most freshmen going from playing high school ball to college ball. Garcia had to get used to playing a different role for the Cougars.

“My role was a lot different than what I was used to at Scottsbluff High School, so that was a big adjustment for me,” she said.
