BEN POOLE: Love God, love people, repeat

Focus on Faith commentary by Ben Poole, senior pastor at First Baptist Church in Scottsbluff

Can you think back to a time when the world was just…better? People were kind, kids were respectful, and schools were safe? Remember when we all stood for our national anthem, or said the pledge of allegiance every morning in school? We really don’t have to look too far back, maybe September 12, 2001, a day that seems to be forgotten. Every flag flew that day. Our nation let go of many of the differences we see today, and we came back together as one people. In the midst of the heartbreak and fear, something amazing took place – America became alive! Sadly, it didn’t last all that long.

More recently, our nation has been engulfed in a tidal wave of pain and suffering. I tend to believe part of it comes from the fallout of 9/11. People began openly targeting others simply by looks, what they wore on their heads, where they worshiped, and even how some spoke. Through all of that, we have seen the outpouring of racial tensions coming to light, a new segregation based on color and beliefs, and a deep emotional stirring in the political arena. Then to top that off, we are enduring (hopefully coming to the end of) this world-wide pandemic that pushes us all even deeper into this tension of an us vs. them mentality.

So, how do we find the right balance in the culture we are in today? As a pastor this can be difficult at times. Just like you, I have my own convictions, beliefs, and desires. I have things I would like to say or share on social media, but I have also come to the conclusion that my opinions don’t matter. Let me clarify; I believe my first and most important role in this world is being a Christian. This goes beyond my role, but even to the depths of who I am, and whose I am. I would say that goes for my fellow Christian brothers and sisters. I believe we need to think about a “spiritual reset” on our priorities.
