FEATURE: Bridgeport music teacher following in her mother’s footsteps

Michaela (Hoffman) Babic, a 2003 Bayard High School graduate, grew up with a love for singing and playing musical instruments, and a big reason why was because of her mom, the late Sharon Hoffman who spent 34 years teaching music at Bayard Public Schools and was recently inducted into the Nebraska Music Education Association Hall of Fame. Babic – as well as her two siblings – ended up becoming music teachers themselves, and Babic is now in her 12th year of teaching, including her fourth year at Bridgeport Public Schools. Babic said she’s glad she chose to follow in her mother’s footsteps, for she loves making a positive impact on students through music.

BRIDGEPORT – When Michaela (Hoffman) Babic and her two siblings – Sarah (Hoffman) Consbruck and Jacob Hoffman – decided they wanted to pursue music education as a career, they didn’t have to look far for guidance.

Their mother, the late Sharon Hoffman, was a vocal and instrumental music teacher in Bayard for 34 years, and she was well respected for her music teaching abilities not only locally but also state-wide. She even was recently inducted into the Nebraska Music Education Association Hall of Fame.

“As far as guidance, she was the gold standard for music education in small schools,” said Babic, a 2003 Bayard High School graduate. “My mom’s name was known in the music departments at probably just about every school in the state because she was so good at what she did. It was her life work. Besides being a mom and a grandma, it was probably the most important thing she ever did, and she was really good at it. Following her blueprint gave me and my sister and brother a really good idea of what we needed to do to be successful in it, too.”
