FEATURE: ‘I love serving in youth ministry’

When Kate Schmer and her family, of Minatare, began attending Grace Chapel in Scottsbluff about 13 years ago, she wanted to use the skills God gave her to help others. So, she started helping with Sunday school, the Wednesday night youth program, and Vacation Bible School, and she eventually was hired as the Children’s Ministry Director at the church, a position she still holds today. She said she loves helping at the church, especially teaching children as much as she can about God.

MINATARE – When Kate and Dustin Schmer got married in 2006, they talked about finding a church they could start attending.

“We thought it would be nice to have that in our lives,” Kate said.

They weren’t in a rush, though, to find a church.

“Neither one of us was raised with faith being central in our lives,” Kate said. “We had talked about going to church and thought it would be nice to raise our kids with faith, but at that time, going to church wasn’t high on our priority list. We thought we would find a church someday, but we weren’t in a hurry. We thought we had plenty of time.”

About four months after getting married, though, the Schmer’s got a big wake-up call.
