‘I don’t feel like it’s my time to go yet’

Renee Schwab of Scottsbluff, who owns the Dry Dock Bait Shop by Lake Minatare, was given 6 months to live last year after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She beat that, but now she faces another big battle – liver cancer. She aims to beat that, too, by staying positive and saying lots of prayers

SCOTTSBLUFF – Renee Schwab of Scottsbluff sat peacefully with her legs crossed in a chair recently one cool evening at the Dry Dock Bait Shop, the business she’s owned by Lake Minatare for the last couple years.

Schwab has grown accustomed to working long hours at the bait shop, seven days a week. It can be exhausting, she said, but she wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.

“This is the best thing that I could be doing right now,” she said, pausing briefly from an interview to help some fishermen purchase some minnows. “If I weren’t here, I would probably just be at home feeling sorry for myself.”

It would be understandable if Schwab were at home feeling sorry for herself, as she puts it. Few people can relate to the heartache, physical pain and wave of emotions she’s been going through in the last 12 months.
