DALTON – Zac Henke, a junior at Leyton High School, has been named Nspire Today!’s Male Student of the Week, sponsored by First State Bank. He’s involved in football, track & field, National Honor Society, FCA, student council (vice president), and L Club. He’s also involved in his youth group at United Church of the Plains in Dalton. His GPA is a 3.8. His parents are Kevin and Amy Henke.

Q: You participate in a lot of activities. Which one do you enjoy the most?

HENKE: “I really like football. I’ve been playing that sport for a long time, and it’s just kind of grown on me every year I’ve been playing.”

Q: What is your favorite non-sports activity?

HENKE: “Either National Honor Society or student council.”

Q: Why do you enjoy being part of student council?

HENKE: “It gives you a chance to work with all the students and to be a leader in school. I like to find out from other students how we can help to improve things in the school.”

Q: How many years have you been involved in student council?

HENKE: “Every year that I’ve been in high school and two years in junior high.”

Q: What’s been the student council’s biggest achievement since you’ve been part of that group?

HENKE: “This year we didn’t have open campus. But we’ve been working with our superintendent and principal, and starting this next semester we’ll have open campus on Fridays. I think everyone is very excited to try it. It’s something new, and it will be a nice break from school.”

Q: How many years have you been playing football?

HENKE: “I’ve been playing since I was in third grade.”

Q: How many years have you started in football?

HENKE: “Every year that I’ve been in high school.”

Q: What positions do you play?

HENKE: “I kind of play everywhere, but my main positions are tight end and fullback on offense, and this year on defense it’s defensive end and linebacker.”

Q: How did this past football season go for Leyton?

HENKE: “My freshman and sophomore years, we were pretty low on numbers, so those seasons were a little rough. We didn’t win any games. But this year at the end of the season – in our last game – we won. I think we broke a 27-game losing streak, so that was fun.”

Q: How much pride do you take in being part of National Honor Society?

HENKE: “It’s a big deal to me. It’s really hard keeping your grades up while competing in sports. I participate in sports every season, so I don’t get a break from practices after school. When I get home at 7, I have to do my homework until 8 or 9, and then I basically have to go straight to bed.”

Q: What is your favorite class this year?

HENKE: “Either shop class or chemistry.”

Q: What subject area do you enjoy the most?

HENKE: “Science. I like learning about how the body works. Science has always interested me.”

Q: Who do you think is the kindest student at Leyton High School?

HENKE: “Probably Maddy Watchhorn or Mason Reimers. They’re always there for people. They’re always in a good mood and are very positive. They keep everyone happy. They make people laugh. They make school more enjoyable for people.”

Q: What are your plans after you graduate from high school?

HENKE: “It’s been back and forth between going to a trade school or going into the medical field. I’m undecided right now.”

Q: What do you like to do for fun?

HENKE: “Hunting, camping, going to the lake, and being with friends.”

Q: Have you always lived in Dalton?

HENKE: “Yes.”

Q: How much have you enjoyed growing up in the Dalton area?

HENKE: “There’s not much to do around Dalton, but we can make a lot out of a little. We’ll find fun things to do.”

Q: What is your favorite TV show?

HENKE: “We mainly watch movies – not a lot of TV shows – so it would probably be ones with Adam Sandler and Kevin Hart and Ice Cube – those kind of action-packed, comedy movies.”

Q: What’s the most exciting place you’ve traveled to?

HENKE: “Probably California. When I was in third grade, we went out there to see my uncle who lives out there. On our way out there, we went to Disneyland.”

Q: What is one thing you wish people would do more of?

HENKE: “I think a lot of people should think before they speak.”

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in the area?

HENKE: “Runza. You just can’t turn down a good cheeseburger there.”

Q: Name one person who you think is a big difference-maker in your community.

HENKE: “My grandma, Barb Reimers. She lives in Dalton. She’s always outgoing, and she’s always there for people. She does a lot in our community, and she’s always positive.”

Q: Do you have any siblings?

HENKE: “I have one sister, Destinee Henke. She’s 18 and is a freshman in college.”
