NSPIRE TODAY! BUSINESS COLUMN: Thanksgiving buffets, a spotlight on FreshFoods’ Skyler Sullivan, a new pasta pass, chances to meet Santa, and much more

Thanksgiving is less than a week away, so it’s time to start gathering all those items to make the turkey, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and whatever else you want to make that day.

Or, here’s another idea: You can let Sizzlin’ Sirloin Steakhouse in Terrytown or the Scotts Bluff Country Club do the cooking for you.

That’s right, both of those local businesses plan to offer a buffet full of all the delicious, traditional foods that are popular on Thanksgiving.

The Sizzlin’ Sirloin Steakhouse’s Thanksgiving buffet will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tammy Relka, owner of the Sizzlin’ Sirloin Steakhouse, has been offering a buffet on Thanksgiving for years – first at the restaurant she operated in Mitchell and then at the restaurant she ran for five years at the Scottsbluff airport. Relka opened the Sizzlin’ Sirloin Steakhouse earlier this year.

“We’ve been doing Thanksgiving buffets for many years, and it’s been very, very popular,” Relka said. “The Thanksgiving buffet we’ll do [at Sizzlin’ Sirloin Steakhouse] will be similar to the one we had at the airport.”

In order to take part in the Thanksgiving buffet at Sizzlin’ Sirloin Steakhouse, people must call ahead to make reservations. There are reservation time slots for every 30 minutes beginning at 10 a.m. Relka estimates that 300 to 400 people will enjoy the buffet on Thanksgiving.

“We do everything by reservation, so the sooner you call, the better off you’re going to be because time slots do fill up fast,” she said. “We’ll only be able to take about 40 reservations every 30 minutes.”

The cost for the Thanksgiving buffet is $20 for adults and $18 for seniors, and kids are $1.50 times their age. The price includes a drink.

The Thanksgiving buffet will feature both breakfast items, including biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, pancakes and waffles, as well as traditional Thanksgiving food, including turkey, ham, roast beef, mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn, dinner rolls, salads, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, and a few other desserts.

The Thanksgiving buffet at the Scotts Bluff Country Club will also feature a wide variety of food items, and is open to the public. That buffet will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

New menu items at Sizzlin’ Sirloin Steakhouse

Relka said people will soon notice some new items on their menu.

“We’ve been working on it pretty hard,” she said. “We’re going to keep what’s on our original menu, but we’re going to add to it. We’ve got some fun things coming, and I think it will interest a lot of people.”

Also, for those who haven’t noticed, the Sizzlin’ Sirloin Steakhouse began offering a Sunday Brunch Buffet in October. It’s available every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Relka, who also offered a buffet at the restaurant she ran at the Scottsbluff airport, said the Sunday Brunch Buffet at the Sizzlin’ Sirloin Steakhouse has been quite popular.

“We’ve been packing the house every Sunday,” she said.

The Sunday Brunch Buffet includes a wide selection of both breakfast and lunch items. Breakfast items include scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, and biscuits and gravy, and the buffets rotate meats such as sausage links, sausage patties, bacon, pancakes, French toast, and waffles.

The lunch part of the buffet includes roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, a vegetable, a salad, desserts and two other entrees that rotate from week to week, including ham, fried chicken, meatloaf, lasagna, and different pastas.

“At the airport, we kept the buffet pretty much the same, but here in town, we’re changing the buffet up so each week people will find something different,” Relka said.

The cost for the Sunday Brunch Buffet is $12 for adults (over 10 years old), $10 for seniors, $7 for kids ages 5-10, and kids under 5 are free.

Spotlight on Skyler Sullivan of FreshFoods in Torrington

Skyler Sullivan is the meat manager at FreshFoods in Torrington. Before taking over that position about six months ago, he worked at FreshFoods in Gering for a year as the meat clerk.

Sullivan said he loves working for FreshFoods.

“I enjoy the people and the atmosphere, and I enjoy doing butcher work,” he said. “Also, [owners Ben and Kerri Dishman] are really good people to work for.”

The 27-year-old Sullivan is a 2011 graduate of Pine Ridge Job Corps. He has two children – Freya, 8 months, and Zyniah, 2. His fiance is Keota Cheromiah.

When he’s not working, Sullivan said he enjoys spending time with his family.

“I have two daughters, so my free time is always spent doing things with them,” he said. “I really enjoy spending time with my family.”

Sullivan added that he and his family have enjoyed becoming part of the Torrington community.

“It’s a great community,” he said. “People are really nice here. They’re easy to get along with. My plan is to stay here as long as I can to gain as much knowledge as I can. I really like my job. I had never managed anything before, so this has been a new experience for me.“

Sullivan said he appreciates the opportunity he’s been given to run the meat department at FreshFoods in Torrington.

“In Gering, within a year, I had learned how to do pork and beef and started cutting on the saw, and I excelled a lot faster at it than they thought I would, so they decided to give me a shot at doing this, which I appreciate,” he said.

Sullivan said he recommends FreshFoods for a number of reasons.

“Our quality of meat is a very high standard,” he said. “Plus, all of our employees are very friendly. Our number one thing is customer service. We would like people to come in and give us a shot because I know they would be impressed with the friendly service, the quality of our food, and everything else this store has to offer.”
