NSPIRING YOUTH: Kimball teen keeping his family’s musical and dancing traditions alive

Gideon Casimiro’s family history includes a number of talented singers and dancers, including his great grandparents, who were movie stars in the Philippines in the 50s and 60s. Gideon wanted to help keep that tradition going, which is one of the reasons he participated in a dance club in elementary school. He’s continued to participate in the arts over the years, including excelling in band, show choir, and choir at Kimball High School. There’s something else, too, that he’s been involved in that’s added to his family’s legacy: He’s played a big role on Kimball High School’s cheer team, including serving as the captain this school year.

KIMBALL – Kimball High School senior Gideon Casimiro remembers vividly the first time he watched a video of his great grandparents, the late Nieves Pangan and Bayani Casimiro, dancing in a movie.

Gideon was 8 years old, and his dad, Patrick Casimiro, pulled up a YouTube clip of Nieves and Bayani, who were movie stars in the Philippines in the 50s and 60s. They were particularly talented at dancing, performing many different styles such as Vaudeville, foxtrot and salsa.

“Gideon’s great grandfather was like the Fred Astaire of the Philippines,” said Gideon’s mother, Melanie Casimiro. “Both of them were really good dancers, and they danced a lot in movies. My husband said they also toured American bases to entertain the troops back then.”

An immense amount of pride and excitement filled Gideon as he watched his great grandparents perform in the black and white movie clip.

“They were really good,” he said. “My parents had talked about them before, but it was really cool to actually watch them perform.”
