MITCHELL – Marjie Schmitt, a senior at Mitchell High School, has been named Nspire Today!’s Female Student of the Month for February. Schmitt has a 4.0 GPA, and she’s been in National Honor Society for the last three years. Other activities she’s involved in at school are student council (president), Tigers Committed, volleyball, basketball, and track and field. In volleyball, she started four years at setter, and in basketball, she’s a three-year starter at guard. In track and field, she competes in the 100 and 300 hurdles and the 4×100 and 4×400 relays. Outside of school, she’s involved in the youth group at First Congregational Church in Torrington. After she graduates from high school, she plans to attend the University of Wyoming in Laramie and pursue a degree in the medical field. Her parents are Michael and Glenda Schmitt.

Q: How has your senior year of school been going?

SCHMITT: “It’s been going well. I took some more challenging classes this year, but in school they give the seniors two hours to finish homework and apply for college, so that time has helped me stay on top of my academics.”

Q: How exciting is it to have a 4.0 GPA at this point in your high school career?

SCHMITT: “I’m really excited. I feel like all the hard work I’ve put in has paid off, and it’s nice to be recognized for that. Academics has always been a big part of my life. My parents have always pushed me to do my best in school, and I have two older siblings who were very invested in academics, so seeing them succeed in school and keep high GPAs motivated me to follow in their footsteps. Maintaining a 4.0 has opened doors for me, which is huge. It’s allowed me to earn some scholarships, so that will help me pay for college.”

Q: How challenging has it been to keep a 4.0 GPA throughout high school?

SCHMITT: “It has been a challenge. Some of the material has been difficult to grasp, but studying hard has helped me keep a 4.0.”
