NSPIRING YOUTH: Pursuing his passion at the zoo

Scottsbluff High School senior Reece Abts always loved visiting Riverside Discovery Center in Scottsbluff when he was a kid, and he even started volunteering there with his mom when he was 7. His love for the zoo, especially being around animals, has led to him deciding that he wants to be a zookeeper for a career. He’s been gaining valuable experience in that area the last three years as an intern at RDC, and this past summer as a 17 year old, he even had a chance to be in charge of his own area, Raptor Row. Abts, who plans to start his collegiate career at WNCC this fall while continuing to volunteer and intern at the zoo, said his ultimate goal is to be a full-time zookeeper at his hometown zoo.

SCOTTSBLUFF – As a kid, Reece Abts had lots of different interests, but there’s one thing that captured his attention more than anything else – the zoo.

“Animals have always really interested me since I was young,” said Abts, a senior at Scottsbluff High School. “Growing up, my mom and dad would take me to the zoo pretty frequently, and I loved it. I always looked forward to being around the lions, the peacocks, and all the other animals there.”
