Darlene was born to Jacob and Mary (Sterkel) Moore on March 29. 1928 at their family farm in the Huntley area. They farmed in many of our local areas including Torrington, Veteran, south Morrill, Sunflower, Mitchell Valley, and Lingle. She received her early education in Veteran and finished in Sunflower.
She married the love of her life, Walter Strauch, of Mitchell on February 17, 1946. They lived and farmed in the Mitchell area. To this union two children were born, Hope and Dennis. Walter passed away March 15, 1970.
Darlene married Ted Meyers on April 4, 1978. They resided on a farm in the Minatare area until Ted’s death in 2007, after which Darlene moved to Mitchell for the remainder of her days.
Darlene was a long time member of St. James Lutheran Church and a member of the Dorcas Society. She was active with her swimming class at the Splash until it closed. She never learned how to swim but she thoroughly enjoyed all of the friends she made while there. You could often find them having lunch on Fridays at different restaurants in the area.
Throughout her life, Darlene held several jobs. She worked in the lab at the Mitchell Sugar Factory, drove a school bus for Mitchell and loved each and every child that rode with her, was a cook at the Veteran’s Home, worked in the Deli at Panhandle Coop, and sold Avon on the side. She sure did enjoy to give Avon to everyone she loved during the holidays.
Darlene was an avid gardener and took pride in growing her blackberries. She also grew the most magnificent roses you’d ever seen. She loved her children and grandchildren and took pride in gifting them something using one of her many talents. She was also an excellent cook and baked the best pies in the valley. She always made Hope and Dennis their favorite pie for their birthday.
Survivors include her daughter Hope (Scott) Miller and son Dennis (Eva) Strauch, all of Mitchell; grandchildren Lori (Pete) Schaar of Crawfordville, FL, Stacy (Jeff) Darnell of Greeley, CO, Nichole (Nicholas) Case of Gretna, NE, Kellan (Megan) Strauch of Lincoln, NE, and Blake (Kelsey Dunkle) Strauch of Lincoln, NE; great grandchildren Trevor Fink, Samantha Darnell, Jake Darnell, Brecken Strauch, Anita Strauch, Evie Case, Alexsis Schaar, and Austin Schaar; great-great grandchildren Adan and Sofia Fink; and numerous nieces and nephews.
