SCOTTSBLUFF – Carson Hauschild, a senior at Scottsbluff High School, has been named First State Bank’s Female Student of the Week. She participates in band, choir, show choir, Tri-M, golf, musical, and mock trial. Her parents are Jon and Heather Hauschild.

Q: You’re involved in quite a few activities. Which one do you enjoy the most?

HAUSCHILD: “Golf. It gives me something to do, and it keeps my mind and body active.”

Q: How many years have you been playing golf?

HAUSCHILD: “Four years.”

Q: How many years were you on the varsity golf team?

HAUSCHILD: “Two years.”

Q: Talk about how exciting this season was for the Bearcat golf team, capped by winning the Class B state championship.

HAUSCHILD: “It was really exciting. Winning the state championship wasn’t something we thought we could do at the beginning of the season. But once we won our first tournament – it was our home tournament – it really hit home that we could continue winning if we continued to work hard. Also, we had really good team chemistry. We bonded really well, and we pushed each other.”

Q: How pleased were you with how you played this season?

HAUSCHILD: “I wasn’t extremely pleased, but I’m still happy with how far I’ve come.”

Q: Do you plan to keep playing golf after high school?

HAUSCHILD: “Yes, I am. I don’t think I’m going to play in college, but I would like to keep competing in little tournaments.”

Q: What is your favorite non-sports activity?

HAUSCHILD: “Show choir. I love to sing, and I love to dance. I also love the people I’m around in show choir.”

Q: What are your plans after you graduate from high school?

HAUSCHILD: “I’m going to attend college, but I’m not sure where yet. I’m thinking it might be the University of Wyoming. I’d like to do something in the health field.”

Q: What got you interested in the health field?

HAUSCHILD: “Once I switched into the health career academy and I got into anatomy and physiology, the health field really interested me.”

Q: What would you like to do for a career?

HAUSCHILD: “I’m really torn between three things: Physical therapy, genetic counseling, or speech/language pathology.”

Q: Why are you leaning toward going to the University of Wyoming?

HAUSCHILD: “I just think it’s a good atmosphere for me.”

Q: Talk about how important school is to you, especially getting excellent grades.

HAUSCHILD: “Doing well in school is really important to me. I used to not treat it that way, but then when I got to high school, I realized that there’s a lot riding on how I perform in high school. In order to be successful in the future, I knew I had to work hard now.”

Q: How has your high school career gone overall up to this point?

HAUSCHILD: “I think I’ve had a really successful high school career in my activities and academically. I’ve enjoyed it.”

Q: Is it hard for you to believe you’re a senior?

HAUSCHILD: “Extremely. It seems like I joined some clubs just yesterday.”

Q: What instrument do you play in band?

HAUSCHILD: “I play the tenor sax.”

Q: How many years have you been playing the tenor sax?

HAUSCHILD: “I think I’ve been playing it since fifth grade. I started out playing the alto saxophone, but then in seventh grade, I got moved to the tenor.”

Q: Which teacher do you feel has made the biggest influence on you?

HAUSCHILD: “I think Mr. [Michael] Koch. He was my middle school band teacher and, honestly, I wish I would have had more time with him. He’s very calm, and he’s such a good teacher. I like the way he educates students. I wasn’t too sure about coming to the middle school for band – I was really nervous because I transferred there from a private school – but he really kept me going. I got to tour Europe with him while playing my instrument. He provided me with a lot of great experiences.”

Q: What is your favorite class this year?

HAUSCHILD: “I’m really enjoying English Comp I.”

Q: Have you lived in Scottsbluff your entire life?

HAUSCHILD: “Yes, I have.”

Q: Have you enjoyed growing up in Scottsbluff?

HAUSCHILD: “I used to not appreciate living in a small town, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve seen the benefits of it. It’s not too busy, and I love all the outdoor activities around here. I think everyone takes for granted the Monument and the Wildcat Hills. It’s great to get out of the house and go see nature like that.”

Q: What do you think is the coolest attraction in the WyoBraska area?

HAUSCHILD: “Probably the Wildcat Hills. There’s so many trails to hike on there, and there are so many different trees. It’s a completely different land compared to the town. There’s a lot of wildlife there, too.”

Q: Who do you think is the kindest student at Scottsbluff High School this year?

HAUSCHILD: “Probably Halle Shaddick. She’s a junior. She’s one of my best friends I met on the golf team. She’s always been there for everyone. She always works hard in school and in her activities. She sacrifices a lot of her personal life for other people.”

Q: What is your favorite local restaurant?

HAUSCHILD: “I love Backaracks. I like their chicken wings – boneless, of course.”

Q: If you could give a shoutout to one business in Scottsbluff, which one would it be and why?

HAUSCHILD: “I would give a shoutout to Nutters Bulk & Natural Foods. It’s one of my favorite places to shop. That’s also the place where I got my first job. They took a chance on hiring me, and I had a great experience there.”

Q: Do you still work there?

HAUSCHILD: “No, I don’t. I work at the Scotts Bluff Country Club now.”

Q: What do you do at the country club?

HAUSCHILD: “I bus tables.”

Q: Favorite TV show?

HAUSCHILD: “Shark Tank.”

Q: What kind of music do you like to listen to?

HAUSCHILD: “R&B and country.”

Q: Name one person who you think is a big difference-maker in the Scottsbluff community?

HAUSCHILD: “Katherine Reisig. She is the leader of Tri-M. She’s the president, and she organizes all of the volunteer work we do and all of the performances at the nursing homes and even caroling around town. I know she’s in a lot of other clubs, too. She’s just a natural-born leader.”

Q: What inspires you?

HAUSCHILD: “Seeing worth in myself – pushing myself to be better.”

Q: What is one thing you wish people would do more of?

HAUSCHILD: “I wish people would give more time to others, whether it’s smiling or being kind or saying ‘Hi.’”

Q: Do you have any siblings?

HAUSCHILD: “I have one little sister. Her name is Cadence. She’s 13.”
