‘They’ll always hold a special place in my heart’

Barb Pageler of Gering has been a special education teacher for more than 40 years, including the last eight years as a teacher for the visually impaired. Pageler, who plans to retire from ESU 13 at the end of this school year, says she feels blessed that she’s had a chance to teach special needs students ‘who will always be part of my family.’

GERING – Growing up, Barb Pageler’s mother always told her to find “true joy” in life.

And to find it, her mother said, she needed to put Jesus first, others second, and then herself last. Barb took those words to heart.

“I wanted to show other people God through me,” she said. “I wanted to be His hands and His feet. I wanted to spread His joy and His love, and along with that, I wanted to help those who were less fortunate than me.”

Just before Pageler graduated from Ravenna High School in 1971, she began thinking about what she wanted to do for a career. Her mom gave her an idea.

“My mom told me about a lady in our hometown who was a special education teacher,” Pageler said. “I wanted to learn more about it, so I went to talk to her. After hearing about how much she loved being a special education teacher, I decided that’s what I wanted to do, too.”
