TORRINGTON, Wyo. – Miranda Aguayo, a senior at Torrington High School, is this week’s Nspire Today! Female Student of the Week, sponsored by First State Bank. She participates in soccer, Spanish National Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Leadership. Her grade-point average is 3.89. Her parents are Steven Martinez and Andrea Aguayo.

Q: How has your senior year of school been going?

AGUAYO: “It’s been going really good – and fast. I’m ready to move on to college, though, so I’m excited that high school is almost over. The biggest thing right now is that I haven’t been able to play soccer because of the virus, and I want to play soccer in college. So, that’s been kind of a bummer.”

Q: What’s been the highlight of your senior year so far?

AGUAYO: “Seeing friends. I’m in college classes, so I do a lot of things on my own. I only have two high school classes that I go to school for, and the rest of my classes I do online. But it’s always nice to see my friends at high school.”

Q: What’s been your favorite class this school year?

AGUAYO: “I would say Spanish class. Last year I was so done with Spanish. It was hard for me, so I didn’t want to do it anymore. But my teacher [Lisa Racine] talked to me and motivated me to keep going in Spanish, so that’s why I’m in her class now. I really like my teacher. She’s always been there for me.”

Q: What is your favorite non-sports activity at school?

AGUAYO: “Spanish National Honor Society. I enjoy learning Spanish.”

Q: How has the COVID-19 outbreak impacted your life, especially school?

AGUAYO: “It’s different. Your senior year is supposed to be really fun, and you’re supposed to really enjoy your last year. But I feel like I can’t really go outside and do things. I can’t travel, and because of the virus, I might have a shortened soccer season or no season at all. It’s disappointing, but I have friends, and I’m able to go to work, so I have those things. But I know a lot of people are upset because it’s their senior year, and they want to go to school and make more memories.”

Q: What are your plans after you graduate from high school?

AGUAYO: “I’m not exactly sure yet. I might go to the Air Force because they’ll pay for your education, but if not, I plan to go to Casper College and play soccer. I’m hoping I can get a soccer scholarship. I also want to pursue the criminal justice field. I’ve always been interested in spy work or something in that area. I’d like to work for the CIA or the FBI.”

Q: What got you interested in that field?

AGUAYO: “I’ve just always found that stuff interesting.”

Q: Where would you like to live after you graduate from college?

AGUAYO: “I do plan to stay in Wyoming for college because I have scholarships in Wyoming. But after I get everything done in college, I would like to play soccer in a different country. That would be pretty cool. But if that doesn’t happen, I would like to live in California somewhere because I like hot weather.”

Q: Have you always lived in Torrington?

AGUAYO: “No. Since I was little, I’ve moved back and forth between here and Salt Lake City. But I’ve been here since the middle of my freshman year.”

Q: How much have you enjoyed living in Torrington?

AGUAYO: “Coming from a big city, I was very upset when I came here. I didn’t like it, but I finally was able to make some friends, and that helped. My friends are the best. So, it’s been going good. I have a job, I go to school, I get good grades, I’m in sports, and I don’t get into trouble.”

Q: Outside of school, what do you like to do for fun?

AGUAYO: “There’s really not much to do in Torrington, so I like going to work so I can make money. I support myself, so it’s nice to have my own money. Other than that, I like hanging out with my two best friends.”

Q: Where do you work?

AGUAYO: “I work at McDonald’s.”

Q: How long have you been working at McDonald’s?

AGUAYO: “I’ve been here for almost a year. I have done so good here. The first month I got Employee of the Month, and I think it was three months in when I got promoted to be a crew trainer.”

Q: What is your favorite type of music?

AGUAYO: “I like rap music.”

Q: What is your favorite TV show?

AGUAYO: “Ex on the Beach.”

Q: What are your three favorite apps on your cell phone?

AGUAYO: “I like Snapchat, YouTube, and Netflix.”

Q: What is the most exciting place you’ve ever traveled to?

AGUAYO: “I was in Jacksonville, North Carolina, recently, and I would say that’s the best place I’ve ever been to just because I got to go to the beach. I had never been to a beach until I was there. It was so pretty.”

Q: What is your favorite local restaurant?

AGUAYO: “I would have to say McDonald’s. I have to represent where I work.”

Q: What is your favorite thing to order at McDonald’s?

AGUAYO: “I like Hot’n Spicys.”

Q: Who do you think is one of the kindest students at Torrington High School?

AGUAYO: “Jayme Rodgers. She’s so nice to everyone, and she makes sure that other people see different point of views. She gives great advice, and she’s very helpful.”

Q: What is one thing you wish people would do more often?

AGUAYO: “I feel like a lot of people need to be more responsible.”

Q: Do you have any siblings?

AGUAYO: “Yes, I have three older brothers [Fabian Martinez, Micklo Martinez, Jesus Martinez] and two older sisters [Alexandrea Aguayo, and Audrey Aguayo].”

Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?

AGUAYO: “The greatest person who has made an impact on me is my sister, Alex. She has basically been a mom to me. She has been my biggest supporter and role model growing up. I admire her hard work and everything she’s done for me and others. She’s always been there for me.”
