WINTER SPORTS: Gering girl excited to be back on the mat

Arianna Canseco, a senior at GHS, enjoyed lots of success in wrestling growing up, including winning Federation state titles in middle school. She stopped wrestling after middle school because the high school didn’t have girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport, but that changed earlier this year when Gering High School added girls wrestling. Because of that, Canseco decided to go back out for wrestling this winter, and now she has her sights set on trying to qualify for state – and also trying to inspire other girls to get involved in the sport.

GERING – Gering High School senior Arianna Canseco smiles when she recalls how she got her start in wrestling.

It was actually her parents, she said, who decided that she should get involved in wrestling when she was only 4 years old.

“My uncle [Randy Donelson] is a really good wrestling coach, and my parents [Pearl Wilkinson and Robert Canseco] have always liked the sport, too, so they decided to put me in it to see how I would do. Since I was only 4, I didn’t really have a say in the matter,” Arianna said with a laugh.
