Ag Spotlight: Jeff McMurtry of Scottsbluff

Jeff McMurtry of Scottsbluff is a Customer Solutions Specialist for Murphy Tractor & Equipment Co. in Gering. He’s worked at Murphy Tractor for 21 years. He started working there when he was 18 years old as a yard tech, and after graduating from Mitchell High School in 2002, he attended Southeast Community College in Milford, where he earned an associate’s of applied science degree in diesel tech in 2004. He then returned to Murphy Tractor in Gering, where he worked as a diesel tech for 18 years. In February 2022, he became a Customer Solutions Specialist. McMurtry, 39, and his wife, Tiffany, have two children: Jeffrey, a fifth-grader at Westmoor Elementary School in Scottsbluff; and Jermichael, a fourth-grader at Westmoor.

Q: How much have you enjoyed working at Murphy Tractor & Equipment Co.?

McMURTRY: “I’ve absolutely loved it. I’ve been here for 21 years. It’s the only place I’ve worked as an adult. I love what I do every day, and I really like the people I work with. It’s a great place to work.”

Q: Why did you decide to become a Customer Solutions Specialist?

McMURTRY: “It came about because my knees were getting too sore from being on the concrete [while doing diesel tech work]. I couldn’t do that anymore, but I wanted to stay involved with the parts and services department. My job now consists of talking to customers and helping them figure out their needs and what they should be looking for.”

Q: You spent 18 years working as a diesel tech. What was that experience like?

McMURTRY: “I really loved it. There’s nothing better than going out and working on customers’ machines. I liked building relationships with customers to the point where they trusted me to stay on their property even if they were gone, and they knew I would lock things up when I was done. That’s what I love about this area – there’s a great sense of community here. I do miss that work sometimes. I miss diagnosing problems. You really have to try to figure out what’s wrong with machines at times, but I always liked that challenge.”
