Cody Ferguson, a senior at Gering High School, is this week’s Kristy Culek Agency, LLC-American Family Insurance Male Athlete of the Week. At last weekend’s Chadron State College Indoor Track and Field Meet, Ferguson won the 400 meters in 54.98 seconds. He was also on the winning 4×160 and 4×400 relays. Last season Ferguson qualified for state as a member of the 4×800 relay. In addition to track and field, Ferguson competes in basketball. His parents are Jody and Greg Ferguson.
Q: Were you pleased with how you performed overall in the Chadron State College Indoor Meet?
FERGUSON: “I thought I performed pretty good. I was mentally focused throughout the day. I was ready to run. I was excited for it.”
Q: Which event do you feel like you excelled in the most?
FERGUSON: “My open 400 because I talked to my coaches and they said I was really close to the time they wanted me to run. I was pretty excited about that.”
Q: What are your goals for this season?
FERGUSON: “My main goal is to hopefully make it to state one more time since it’s my senior year.”
Q: What events do you plan to do this season?
FERGUSON: “My coach said I’ll be doing, off and on, the 400 and the 800, and I believe I’ll be on the 4×100 and the 4×400 and possibly the 4×800.”
Q: What has been the highlight of your track and field career so far?
FERGUSON: “I would say going to state and running the 800, which is just unreal to me because I usually don’t run the 800. I’m mostly a 400 guy. It was a cool experience, though, running on the 4×800 at state.”
Q: What track and field meet are you looking forward to competing in the most this season?
FERGUSON: “I think GNAC because there will be some really good competition there.”
Q: What do you enjoy most about competing in track and field?
FERGUSON: “It’s exciting to me. I really like the 4×400 because it’s the last event and everybody is on their feet ready for that race because it’s a really exciting one.”
Q: Which athlete on your team makes people laugh the most?
FERGUSON: “I would say either Trey Zwickl or Johnny Castrejon-Lopez.”
Q: What is something that your coach has told you or your team that has really stuck with you?
FERGUSON: “Coach [Randy] Plummer always tells us to go after it. The other coaches really push us hard to get better, too.”
Q: What is your favorite event in track and field, and what is your least favorite event?
FERGUSON: “My favorite event is the 400, and my least favorite event is the 800 because I’m still not used to running it yet. It’s a fun event, but I’m still learning how to run it.”
Q: How much do you enjoy representing Gering at athletic events?
FERGUSON: “It’s fun. I love to represent Gering. You’re out there working hard not just for yourself but also for your teammates and your school.”
Q: What is your favorite class this year?
FERGUSON: “My favorite class is economics. Coach Plummer teaches that class.”
Q: Which teacher has made the biggest influence in your life?
FERGUSON: “There are a lot of them, like Randy Plummer (economics), Kim Graslie (math), Kim Busby (math) and also Adam Freeburg (PE). They’ve all helped me a lot.”
Q: In your opinion, what’s the best thing about living in Gering?
FERGUSON: “I would say it’s having a great school and great classmates. Also, I have a lot of family around here, so that makes it a lot of fun.”
Q: What do you think is the best place to hang out in the Gering/Scottsbluff area?
FERGUSON: “That’s a tough question. Sometimes in the summer my friends and I will go to the Wildcats or to Lake Minatare.”
Q: What is your favorite restaurant in this area?
FERGUSON: “I really do like Runza.”
Q: Name one person who you feel makes a big difference in your community.
FERGUSON: “Definitely Coach Plummer. He’s always there for everybody. He’s a really good guy.”
Q: What do you like to do for fun outside of school activities?
FERGUSON: “I like to watch Netflix and hang out with my friends, and I like to play video games as well.”
Q: What’s the most interesting or popular thing going on in your school or in your community right now?
FERGUSON: “Definitely the new school. Everybody is excited to see what it will look like when it’s all done.”
Q: Do you work? If so, where?
FERGUSON: “I’m going to work this summer. I’m going to try to work for the City of Gering and mow for the parks.”
Q: Do you have any brothers or sisters?
FERGUSON: “My brothers are Schyler Ferguson and Austin Ferguson.”
